Preparation:
Thorough substrate preparation is essential.
The surface must be clean, dry, and free from dirt, grease and other contamination before applying the floor paint.
A new concrete floor should be left for at least 3 months before the floor paint is applied, and a moisture check should be carried out to ensure this lies within acceptable limits.
If not within the limits and it is above 14%, it is possible the floor paint film will become detached from the substrate due to the effect of hydrostatic pressure as the concrete floor dries out.
A hard concrete floor or granolithic surfaces should be treated with Polycote Etch IT to improve adhesion, and any surface oil, grease, or contamination chemically removed using Polycote Degrease IT.
These treatments must be thoroughly rinsed off and the surface allowed to dry before painting. Pits and holes may be filled using Polycote Cretex products.
Please refer to relevant Data Sheets.
Mixing:
Stir very thoroughly before use to ensure full dispersion of solids throughout the mix.
Mechanical mixing from the bottom of the tin in an upwards motion is advised for 2 minutes.
Failure to stir the paint sufficiently prior to use can result in colour and gloss differences between the same batches of paint when applied.
Application:
Apply by roller or brush (short to medium pile roller).
If the area is bare and has not previously been treated, thin the first coat with 30% White Spirit to improve penetration and adhesion working well into the surface.
This should be left for approx. 24 hours, ensuring it is touch dry, before applying the second coat.
Apply second coat unthinned.
On previously sealed floors apply two coats.
On previously painted surfaces one coat may provide adequate coverage (we recommend testing a small area first to check compatibility).
With a lighter colour 2 coats may be required to deal with opacity issues.
AVOID APPLYING TOO THICKLY.
Do not cover at a rate less than 45m² (wet film thickness 110µ, dry film thickness 50µ) per 5L unit.
Applying polyurethane paint too thickly can prevent curing, resulting in a skin forming on the surface or concrete floor while remaining soft underneath.
Non slip applications:
For slip resistance, sprinkle Calcined Bauxite aggregate onto the WET first coat.
The normal sprinkling rate is 5-18m² per 1kg aggregate, depending on slip resistance required.
This method allows selective areas of nonslip treatment to be applied as required.
Spiked shoes should be worn to avoid disturbing the wet coating.
Allow to completely dry, then re-coat to encapsulate the aggregate.
Drying time:
Under normal conditions of humidity and temperature (20°C) drying time is approximately 4-6 hours, recoatable after drying overnight.
Application temperature:
Do not apply below +5˚C as drying time will be affected.
Do not apply if rain is imminent.
Coverage:
Depending on the texture and porosity of the surface, the coverage of External Floor Paint is approximately 45m² per 5L unit.
Cleaning:
Due to the product formulation, soapy water will not work. Application tools may be cleaned using White Spirit or Turpentine Substitute.
Shelf Life And Storage:
Shelf life in unopened containers is approximately 12 months subject to conditions of storage. Store in a cool, dry, frost-free environment away from sources of ignition.
